Wedding Parade
Soft clothing.
Sun-worshiped skin.
San Miguel de Allende.
Sin responsabilidades en este día.
Skies changing of the guard to evening.
My God, love is in the air.
In the romantic serenade of estudientinas
full of family and dance and light.
There is love in just about everything –
across the cobblestones, in the strings,
a ceviche of “Volaré” wets lips
in callejoneada delight.
The burro dons a burden of spirits,
and lamplight dances with the stucco
so that all may see her carefully-braided hair,
host to a mantilla weave of dreams.
Listen close.
Laughter and song.
Loving professions fading below.
Long-armed Mojigangas leading procession
down la calle Diez de Sollano y Dávalos.
Who are we, if we do not love and dream?
My rooftop thoughts tonight.
Author’s note: Years ago, standing on the rooftops of San Miguel de Allende, I was struck by its unparalleled beauty. Walking its streets, one can't help but fall in love with its magic—vibrant arts, colonial architecture, cozy cafes, and cobblestone paths. It's a destination ripe for romance and weddings. This poem captures the storied tradition of the Mexican callejoneada—a lively wedding procession filled with music and celebration through the streets of San Miguel De Allende.
“Mexico is a mosaic of different realities and beauties.”
